There are four shift split options available within the payroll section, providing flexibility in how shifts can be divided and processed for payroll purposes.

Split Friday Saturday

If enabled, hours worked by midnight on Friday will be assigned to Saturday payable hours.

If Saturday Ordinary is enabled:

  • hours worked after Friday will be placed into 'Saturday Ordinary' until the 'Sat ordinary hrs limit' is reached.

  • Then, hours will go into 'Day Overtime' until the 'Saturday Day Overtime hrs limit' is reached, and any remaining hours will be allocated to 'Day Extra Overtime'.

  • Hours worked on Friday will count towards Saturday's hourly limits.

See examples below for how this works.

Example #1 - Using Saturday Ordinary

Settings:

  • Weekday shift (Split Day/Night): Enabled

  • Day Timeframe: 06:00 am - 06:00 pm

  • Night Timeframe: 06:00 pm - 06:00 am

Payable Hours:

  • Day:

    • Day Ordinary hours limit: 8 hours

    • Day Overtime hours limit: 7 hours

    • Saturday First Rate hours limit: 5 hours

  • Night:

    • Night Ordinary hours limit: 2 hours

    • Night Overtime hours limit: 6 hours

  • Saturday Ordinary: Enabled

    • Saturday Ordinary hours limit: 8 hours

Shift: Friday 06:00 pm - Saturday 05:00 am

How it's broken down

06:00 pm - 08:00 pm = 2 hours: Night Ordinary hrs limit
Night Ordinary (N1.5x)

08:00 pm - 12:00 am = 4 hours: Night Overtime hrs limit
Night Overtime (N2x)

12:00 am - 02:00 am = 2 hours: Saturday Ordinary hrs limit (includes hours from Night timeframe, 2+4 = 6, 6+2 = 8 hours total)
Saturday Ordinary (Sat Ord)

02:00 am - 03:00 am = 1 hour: Saturday Day Overtime hrs limit (includes hours from Night Overtime, 4+1 = 5)
Day Overtime (1.5x)

03:00 am - 05:00 am = 2 hours
Day Extra Overtime (2x)

For comparison, here is the result with 'Split Friday Saturday' disabled.

No Sat Ord or Day payable hours used

Example #2 - NOT using Saturday Ordinary

Settings:

  • Weekday shift (Split Day/Night) = enabled

  • Timeframe:

    • Day: 06:00 am - 06:00 pm

    • Night: 06:00 pm - 06:00 am

Payable Hours:

  • Day:

    • Day Ordinary hours limit: 8 hours

    • Day Overtime hours limit: 7 hours

    • Saturday first-rate hours limit: 5 hours

  • Night:

    • Night Ordinary hours limit: 2 hours

    • Night Overtime hours limit: 6 hours

  • Saturday Ordinary = disabled

Shift: Friday 06:00 pm - Saturday 05:00 am

How it's broken down

06:00 pm - 08:00 pm = 2 hours: Night Ordinary hrs limit
Night Ordinary (N1.5x)

08:00 pm - 12:00 am = 4 hours: Night Overtime hrs limit
Night Overtime (N2x)

12:00 am - 01:00 am = 1 hour: Saturday 'Day Overtime' hrs limit (includes hours from Night Overtime 4+1 = 5)
Day Overtime (1.5x)

01:00 am - 05:00 am = 4 hours
Day Extra Overtime (2x)

Example #3 - Using Sat Ordinary with Different Hour Limits

Settings:

  • Weekday shift (Split Day/Night) = enabled

  • Timeframe:

    • Day: 06:00 am - 06:00 pm

    • Night: 06:00 pm - 06:00 am

Payable Hours:

  • Day:

    • Day Ordinary hours limit: 8 hours

    • Day Overtime hours limit: 7 hours

    • Saturday first-rate hours limit: 5 hours

  • Night:

    • Night Ordinary hours limit: 2.5 hours

    • Night Overtime hours limit: 6 hours

  • Saturday Ordinary: Enabled

  • Saturday Ordinary hours limit: 4 hours

Shift: Friday 06:00 pm - Saturday 02:00 am

Note that the 'Saturday Ord' hours column is not used, as the 'Saturday Ordinary hours limit' was reached with the hours worked on Friday.

How it's broken down

06:00 pm - 08:30 pm = 2.5 hours: Night Ordinary hrs limit

Night Ordinary (N1.5x)

08:30 pm - 12:00 am = 3.5 hours: Night Overtime hrs limit

Night Overtime (N2x)

12:00 am - 01:30 am = 1.5 hours: Saturday ‘Day Overtime' hrs limit (includes hrs from Night Overtime 3.5+1.5 = 5)

Day Overtime (1.5x) - uses Sat default payable hours.

01:30 am - 02:00 am = 0.5 hours

Day Extra Overtime (2x) - uses Sat default payable hours.

For comparison, here is the result with 'Split Friday Saturday' disabled.

Split Saturday Sunday

If enabled, any hours worked on Saturday (up until midnight) will be transferred to the Sunday payable hours. Additionally, the hours within the night extra overtime period will count towards the Saturday hourly limit ('Saturday Day Overtime hrs limit').

If Sunday Ordinary is enabled:

  • hours will be placed into 'Sunday Ordinary' until the limit set in 'Sun ordinary hrs limit'

  • then any remaining hours will be placed into 'Day Extra Overtime'

The hours worked on Saturday will be included in the hourly limit count for Sunday.

See the example below for how they are applied.

Example

Saturday Ordinary (Sat Ord)

10:00 pm - 12:00 am = 2 hours

Day Overtime (1.5x)

12:00 am - 02:00 am = 2 hours

Sunday Ordinary (Sun Ord)

For comparison, here is the result with 'Split Saturday Sunday' disabled.

Split Sunday Monday

Night Extra Overtime (N2x OT)

For comparison, here is the result with 'Split Sunday Monday' disabled.

Why Does it go into Night Payable Hours?

The article mentions this because, generally speaking, it is accurate. However, it depends on the week breakdown chosen on the EBA detail page, as shown in the screenshot below.

For example, if Week Breakdown 6 is selected...

This would be the result:

Once the Sunday Ordinary hours limit is reached, any additional Sunday overtime will be counted towards the Day Extra Overtime payable hours.

Split Public Holiday

If enabled, at the end of the public holiday (midnight), hours will be allocated to the Night, Saturday, or Sunday payable hours, depending on which day the public holiday occurs.

Assuming the public holiday was on Tuesday, after Tuesday:

  • hours will be placed into 'Night Ordinary' until the limit set in 'Night ordinary hrs limit'

  • then hours will be placed into 'Night Overtime' until the ‘Night Overtime hrs limit’,

  • and finally any remaining hours will be placed into 'Night Extra Overtime'

The hours worked on the public holiday will count towards the hourly limit for the following day.

See the example below for how they are applied.

Example

Settings

  • Weekday shift (Split Day/Night) = enabled

Timeframe

  • Day: 06:00 am - 06:00 pm

06:00 pm - 12:00 am = 6 hours: Public Holiday Ordinary hrs limit

Public Holiday Ordinary (PHol Ord)

12:00 am - 04:00 am = 4 hours: Night Overtime hrs limit

Night Overtime (N2x)

04:00 am - 05:00 am = 1 hour: Night Extra Overtime hr limit

Night Extra Overtime (N2x OT)

For comparison, here is the result with 'Split Public Holiday' disabled

Once the Public Holiday Ordinary hours limit is reached, any additional hours will be counted as Public Holiday overtime (2.5x). The hours do not split at midnight.
